Coral reefs are among the most important but yet the most threatened marine communities in the world. Due to this, many nations have established Marine Parks, Sanctuaries and Protected Areas with the hope of protecting and conserving their coral reefs. In Malaysia, the primary objectives for the establishment of Marine Parks were to give special protection to the aquatic ora and fauna within the marine parks, and to ensure sustainable use of its resources by fulling the objectives of conservation, education, research and recreation.
As part of the requirements to manage marine parks effectively, regular monitoring on the status of the reefs needs to be conducted through spatial and temporal scales. This would enable the authorities responsible to have reliable information on changes happening to the reefs where appropriate remedial actions can be taken.
