Reef Check Australia (RCA) is an environmental charity dedicated to building community capacity to understand, appreciate and protect the oceans. Trained volunteers collect and report on reef health data across the Great Barrier Reef, subtropical reefs in SE Queensland, and a growing program on Ningaloo Reef. As part of the Reef Check network, we offer local action with a global connection to more than 90 initiatives around the world.
Our three core program activities are:
- Inspiring reef-minded people: We connect people with reef science by providing accessible, accurate and unbiased information to support informed and engaged reef champions.
- Engaging volunteers in reef health monitoring: We cultivate robust citizen science training and data collection programs that are a valued and trusted source of reef health information at local, national and global scales.
- Empowering local conservation action for the Reef: We create opportunities for people and communities to be agents for measurable and positive change to protect reef health.
IYOR Activities Plan
Throughout 2018, Reef Check Australia (RCA) will be running an Action of the Month campaign, highlighting a range of ways that people can get involved: https://www.reefcheckaustralia.org/action-of-the-month.html
Teams of trained volunteers are aiming to get to a minimum of 100 reef survey sites to report on reef health: https://www.reefcheckaustralia.org/data.html
RCA is also running three Reef Ambassador training programs (Townsville, Sunshine Coast and Brisbane). RCA is seeking to expand this initiative to more program areas, in particular Cairns, Ningaloo, and Whitsundays:www.reefcheckaustralia.org/ambassadors.html
