Sustainable Ocean Day: Ocean Voices took place on November 23rd in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, concurrently with the fourteenth session of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP14). Hosted by the CBD Secretariat, with financial support from the Government of the Republic of Korea, the Government of Sweden, the European Union, and the French Biodiversity Agency.
Sustainable Ocean Day was split into six segments:
- Voices of coral reefs
- Voices from the deep sea
- Voices marine mammals/migratory species
- Voices of fish
- Voices of mangroves/seagrass
- Voices of ocean peoples
IYOR along with The Ocean Agency (TOA), The Nature Conservancy (TNC), Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), Vulcan Inc., Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and WWF co-hosted the ‘Voices of coral reefs’ session. During this session, we unveiled a Coral Reef Quiz Show designed especially for the day and challenged our fellow attendees of Ocean Voices to test their coral knowledge.
The voluntary participants of the quiz were divided into four teams who then competed to win $800 (which was kindly donated by Vulcan Inc.). At the end of the quiz, the money was donated to HEPCA, a local charity that works to protect and conserve the terrestrial and marine ecology of the Red Sea, in the name of the winning team.
We are very proud to have been part of such a unique day and exceptionally grateful to those who volunteered to participate in the quiz. For more information on the day and the other sessions please see here.
